If you are of a certain age, you will probably have memories of sleepless nights spent tossing and turning on a mattress which was incredibly uninviting.
The mattress on the bed I slept in when I was a kid seemed to have been designed to give you the most uncomfortable night possible. This may have had something to do with its age, but I’m willing to bet that, even when it was brand new, this mattress would have been the perfect cure for narcolepsy. These days, there is no need for sleepless nights as most mattresses are made from high standard shaped foams which are guaranteed to put you to sleep. The ultimate in these kinds of foam products are memory foam mattresses, which have grown massively in popularity over recent years.
Memory foam was developed by NASA in the late sixties, as their scientists looked for the most suitable material for the astronauts beds and other equipment in the Apollo capsules. When they moved into the mainstream, memory foam was found to be especially beneficial to people who suffer from bad backs and other spinal problems, as they mould to the user’s body shape which allows a more comfortable night’s sleep. Having said that, many fit and healthy people have also found memory foam to be the best material in a mattress. If you want any more information about memory foam and other foam products, talk to the people at Technical Foam Services.

It may be more or less invisible to the majority of us, but foam manufacturers know just how important their products are to the modern world. If it wasn’t for the UK foam companies, like Technical Foam Services, your world would be a little less comfortable than it is right now. If you have a memory foam mattress, then you will understand the advantages the material can offer.
Foam rubber is found in a wide range of applications and products, from cushioning in car seats and furniture to insulation in walls and various appliances, right through to the soles and heels in shoes and boots. These foam products are things we tend to take for granted, because they are in just about everything we come into contact with every day.
Though it may seem as if foam is just foam, with no variety or differing styles, there are actually two basic types of foam. Flexible foams have an open cell structure and can be produced in both high and low densities, and closed cell foams. Whatever your needs are when it comes to foam products, the people at TFS will be able to help and advise you on the best product to suit your needs. With two decades of experience behind them, Technical Foam Services can lay claim to being one of the most important foam suppliers in the UK, with happy customers all over the globe ready to verify this.

Surfing has become increasingly popular over the last twenty years or so, and even here in Britain, where the weather rarely lives up to the Californian image of surfing, the sport has flourished. If you are thinking of having a go at surfing, it’s best to look at the various types of board available to the beginner.
Foam surfboards are designed with the amateur in mind, as they are softer than the regular boards. You may think that this is not important, but remember that, as a newcomer, you are likely to bump against your board, so it’s best if you choose one made from a softer material. Foam boards are known as ‘softies’ and contain a core made from a range of shaped foams. This makes them extremely buoyant, which has to be a good thing for those new to the sport.
With the foam buoyancy, longer length, and increased width, a foam board is perfect to learn on. They are much easier to balance on and learn the surfing basics, as well as the fact that they are softer, which will reduce the impact of any injuries caused by unfortunate collisions with a conventional board.
Of course, foam products can be found in many other pieces of sports equipment, but it’s easy to argue that when it comes to shaped foams, surfing has benefitted more than any other sport thanks to the buoyancy effect of machined foam.

Although they may not be aware of it, cyclists of all kinds have a lot to thank foam for. In the old days, before advances were made in engineered foam, the contact points of the bicycle were uncomfortable at best, and torture at worst. Take the saddle of the bike. Before the advent of rigid foams, this would be manufactured from leather, which could take years to soften and adjust to the shape of the rider.
When plastic engineers looked at this, they came up with a saddle made from plastic and covered with leather. Beneath the leather surface was a layer of foam, and depending on how much comfort you wanted, this could be made to different thicknesses. From the shopping bike to the top of the range machines used in the Tour de France, saddles with engineered foam began to appear. At the other end of the bike, the handlebars also benefitted from advances in flexible foams.
Prior to this, the handlebars would be covered by either a cloth or plastic tape which did nothing to reduce the jarring from the road surface. With the advent of shaped foams, bike manufacturers realised that they could produce tape which contained foam beneath the surface, so within a couple of years cyclists found that the two main contact points were much improved. The brake levers on racing bikes also benefitted from advances in rubber engineering in the fifties. Prior to this, the hoods of the lever were bare metal, and as anyone who has cycled any distance will tell you, this was hardly comfortable.

If you are looking for a UK foam company to help you with your product, you have certainly come to the right place. Technical Foam Services have a great reputation for being able to supply all kinds of foam, from machined foam to natural sponge and just about everything related to foam products in between.
Perhaps you are looking for fire retardant foams, and you need advice about this product? Whatever questions you have about fire retardant foam, or any other foam products, the expert staff at Technical Foam Services will be able to help you, but here is a brief explanation of how this product works.
Aluminum trihydrate is one of the compounds that act as a flame retardant. When temperatures approach 200 degrees it becomes aluminum oxide and water. This creates a gas close to the surface of the product and prevents flames from spreading, which will give householders time to escape from a blaze. After several tragedies involving furniture which didn’t have flame retardant foam, new legislation meant that all furniture had to be manufactured from this material. This has resulted in fewer tragedies involving fires which were exacerbated by the materials used in furniture such as sofas, chairs and beds.
Furniture manufacturers in the UK have had to adhere to these laws for many years now, but if you are looking for any advice on these, or any other foam products, talk to the people at Technical Foam Services and they will be happy to help.

Foam is one of those products which we don’t even think about, but if we were to take a moment to consider it, you may be surprised by the number of everyday products we use which contain foam. The obvious place to start is the house, and in particular, the bedroom, where the mattresses and pillows will more than likely contain one form of foam or another. Memory foam has become increasingly popular over recent years, as people realise the benefits of this type of foam, as it adjusts to the shape of the body and allows a more comfortable night’s sleep. And with back pain a problem for many, this comes highly recommended.
Step outside and have a look at your car. Inside that metal body, many different types of foam will be used in the construction of the interior, including engineered foam in the dash board, which may be covered in a form of neoprene, and various types of shaped foams will be found in the seats.
Rubber foams and rubber itself are also used in vehicles, from the tyres to the floor mats and mud flaps. Foam does not really get people excited when it is mentioned, but without it our lives would be very different. When it comes to foam products, there are likely more of them around than you would have realised; not only is it an incredibly useful, comofrtable material, but its sheer diversity can be astounding.

There is nothing more debilitating than back pain, and if this leads to a lack of sleep this discomfort is magnified. One of the worst things about back pain is that, in many cases it means the sufferer is unable to get a good night’s sleep. As statistics suggest that as many as 50 per cent of people suffer from back pain at some stage in their life, this means a lot of us will face this problem. One of the ways sufferers can alleviate this pain is to choose a foam mattress which will support their spine, but which type is the best in this respect?
With the advent of memory foam mattresses, this has given a life line to sufferers as the memory foam mattress seems to be more suitable than a conventional foam mattress.Memory foam mattresses are made from a visco-elastic material that was originally developed by NASA, in the early days of the Apollo missions. NASA experimented with various types of shaped foams as they searched for the most suitable beds for astronauts.
A memory foam mattress responds to heat and body pressure to mould itself to the exact shape of the body. This means that weight is distributed evenly and the correct amount of support is given to each part of the body. A memory foam mattress will result in the correct alignment of your neck and spine, which is why those who suffer from back pain have found some kind of relief when they choose memory foam rather than a conventional machined foam mattress.

If you happen to see a cycle race, you will notice that all the competitors are wearing helmets, whether it is a local event or the Tour de France. The protective headgear is essentially made from foam, which you may think would not be very effective, but the type of engineered foam used in the helmets has been proved to be a major factor in the reduction of head injuries among cyclists. When you compare the latest cycling helmets with those worn by racing cyclists just twenty years ago, it is amazing to think that anyone believed the old style helmets could afford any protection. They were essentially strips of tubular leather which contained compressed horsehair, and as if that isn’t bad enough, the strap system used wasn’t up to the job.
In the event of a crash, it wasn’t unusual for the helmet to come off which made them worse than useless. The strange thing is, in the major races such as the Tour de France, helmets were not compulsory, but all that changed in 2002. By this time, the foam manufacturers had evolved the technology in foam products which meant that the new type of cycling helmet was both lightweight and effective in reducing the energy of an impact. The world governing body made helmets containing shaped foams compulsory, and after a little resistance from the leading riders, by 2003 these were being worn by riders in everything from the local race to the Tour de France.
