Hydrophilic foams

Cosmetic foams, Supersoft foams

Hydrophilic foams are the ideal flexible foam solution for applications in which moisture absorbency, breathability, and softness are vital properties.

As the leading manufacturer of technically superior, quality flexible foams at Technical Foam Services we manufacture a range of hydrophilic polyurethane foams and products in a wide variety of grades, to meet even the most stringent specifications.

These include:

  • Medical dressings
  • Cosmetic applicators and removers
  • Packaging for moisture sensitive goods
  • Consumer goods

Medical applications

Hydrophilic foams have been adopted for a varied range of wound, anti-scar and post-operative dressings with great success. As a leading manufacturer in this field, we supply a wide selection of hydrophilic foam grades.

Providing a superior level of absorbency and significantly higher strength - combined with breathability, biocompatibility, softness, and flexibility - our hydrophilic foam solutions provide an effective non-linting, non-adhering, latex-free protective wound healing environment.

We can also supply products in composite forms with additional anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties and with an in-house engineering team and superior technical capabilities, our range of hydrophilic foam products is second to none.

With an established customer base in the medical sphere, we have a written protocol and sterilising services in place, therefore allowing us to offer a comprehensive, one-stop service.

Cosmetic applications

We produce a wide range of specialised hydrophilic solutions for the cosmetic market, including foam applicators and removers, wipes, sponges, and manicure and pedicure pads.

All 100% latex-free, non-toxic and odourless, these products are incredibly durable and flexible, with no flaking or peeling, while also being extremely soft and gentle on the skin. Washable and re-usable, they are ideal for the application and removal of liquid and powder make-up as well as beauty and aesthetic creams, for use in the home and professional salons.

We also supply cosmetic release foams products, which are specifically engineered to carry and release products such as cleansing products, moisturisers and fragrances.

With our superior in-house engineering facilities and wide range of grades we are able to produce cosmetic hydrophilic foams in a vast array of colours and shapes to meet the exact requirements of each customer in terms of performance and aesthetics.

Protective packaging

In recent times, hydrophilic foams have also been more widely adopted in the electronics packaging industry to provide effective protection where goods are susceptible to moisture damage and this is another area where Technical Foam Services' expertise comes to the fore.

With decades of experience in both hydrophilic foam conversion and the production of protective packaging foams, we have the know-how to produce custom engineered, precision cut products to provide a truly superior solution for producers of moisture sensitive goods.

Soaking up new ideas

We also manufacture a multitude of consumer goods where hydrophilic foams provide superior performance such as durable floor cleaning sponges. As an innovative and forward-thinking company, with outstanding prototype, testing and manufacturing capabilities, we are constantly developing new applications for these highly versatile products.

Hydrophilic Foams: The Science

In basic terms, hydrophilic compounds have a natural affinity to water. Their structure inherently attracts water due to the polar-side groups or charges which form it, as opposed to hydrophobic compounds which are neutral, have no charge, and thus are repelled by water.

Hydrophilic materials are not contaminated with hydrophobic substances, as the membrane is attractive to water; enabling water molecules to 'push' other molecules away to access the membrane. When hydrogen bonds are formed, their stability keeps any contaminants away from the membrane to keep it cleaner.

Hydrophilic properties in certain substances are found to be incredibly useful across many different industries; more particularly in industries which require that certain areas are constantly kept clean and sterile, or to reduce, for example, cross-contamination.

Used as a water absorbent foam across many sectors, hydrophilic foams especially provide the moist, non-crumbling, and oil resistant properties essential for medical foam wound dressing and make-up application, with specially-produced cosmetic foams and wound-dressing foams featuring heavily on the market.

Using Water Absorbent Foam for Wound Dressings

Foam wound dressings are prominently used in the medical sector, as they help to maintain a moist environment and absorb any drainage; maintaining essential cleanliness to help speed-up recovery.

The water absorbent foams used in this sector rely on its hydrophilic properties to make it such an effective solution; it is the absorbency of foam dressings that makes them so hygienic to use, as they leave behind nothing in the wound when removed.

Water absorbent foams are incredibly easy to apply and remove, making them much more comfortable for patients to use when compared to other alternatives. The useful properties of these highly water absorbent foams reduce the risk of contaminants settling in the wound and absorb even the heaviest of drainage; entailing that they need to be changed less often for more cost-effectiveness.

Hydrophilic Foams for Cosmetics

The cosmetic sector is an expansive one, which makes use of cosmetic foams for a host of different products, including make-up applicators, and make-up removal pads or wipes.

Cosmetic foams manufactured with hydrophilic properties which are manufactured as latex-free, non-toxic and odourless are able to offer a high level of performance for all different applications; ensuring a gentle touch against the skin which will resist oils and won't crumble.

The breathability and absorbency of hydrophilic cosmetic foams allows the cosmetic sector to offer clients a flawless and even finish, as they can be cut to a host of different sizes, as per the requirements of domestic and professional users.

Cosmetic foams provide the same cost-efficiency benefits to the cosmetics sector as they do the medical, as they are easily washed and re-used for liquid, solid and powder make-up applications.
