The development of memory foam
Memory foam is a sophisticated product that consistently recovers its original shape following compression.
Developed by NASA under the brand name Confor foam in the 1980s, it was then launched into the wider market in the 1990s, when it was known as visco-elastic foam. It is now widely recognised as memory foam, which is primarily used in mattresses and cushions.
However, while many companies produce memory foam furnishings and bedding materials, the scope for the application of memory foam stretches far beyond this one limited area, and this is where Technical Foam Services' expertise comes to the fore.

What is Memory Foam?

First devised by NASA scientists, memory foams (also known as confor foams) are made from polyurethane with extra chemicals to boost its Viscosity and density. Memory foam reacts to human body heat, meaning it can conform to a body's shape in minutes. After compression, it will recover its shape.
While most people think of mattresses when they think of this material, memory foam can also be used in a wide range of other applications, from helmet lining to ski goggles.
Today, memory foam suppliers make more than 20 different types and densities of confor foams, ranging from being almost rigid, to extremely soft.

Slow Recovery Foams

Visco memory foam is especially popular in the bedding and medical industries, since these confor foams closely mould themselves to the shape of the human body, and Visco memory foam will also distribute pressure efficiently over the whole surface.
